Herb Recipes

Summer Solstice or Litha, occurs the 20th of June in 2008, when the Sun enters zero degrees Cancer. Known as Midsummer in many cultures, it is the longest day of the year and the shortest night. In England, June 21st is “The Day of Cerridwen and Her Cauldron”; Northern Europe is “The Day of the Green Man”; Italian Strega Summer Fest or “La Festa dell’Estate”; other names include Alban Heruin (Druids), Alban Hefin (Anglo-Saxon Tradition), Sun Blessing, Gathering Day (Welsh), Whit Sunday, Whitsuntide, Vestalia (Ancient Roman), the Feast of Epona (Ancient Gaulish), All-Couple’s Day (Greek), and in Ireland this day is dedicated to the faery goddess Aine of Knockaine.

As the Sun enters Cancer, the water sign, this is a time for you to collect water for your altar and spellwork. Perform ritual blessings on an annual supply, gather sea water and rain water from electrical storms for its potent energies at this time.

This is traditionally when you harvest magical and medicinal herbs, which are maturing for their virgin cuttings. Use a curved boline or scythe by the light of the Moon to harvest. Enchant your herbs and roots with a charm. It’s proper to leave an offering for the rest of the plant, and try not to harvest more than 1/3rd to keep herbs healthy and vigorous.

2008 Summer Solstice falls on Friday, June 20th, 19:59 EDT
The sun ascends to its highest latitude on the celestial sphere. In the Northern Hemisphere, we have the longest day and shortest night of the year, and the reverse in the Southern Hemisphere.

Midsummer Incense for ritual celebration:
2 parts White Sandalwood
1 part Cinquefoil (Five Fingers)
1 part Galangal
1 part Mugwort
a few drops Lavender oil
a few drops Neroli oil
a few drops Patchouli oil

Ritual Celebration:

Perform your ritual bath before you begin.
Use a few drops of Patchouli oil and Cinquefoil herb to purify your bath water.
Items you may want: Yellow, gold or white robe; flowers in the same colors.

Assemble altar, ritual tools, and offerings, refer to “Ritual Recipe” for basic steps.
Be sure to have blessing water, sea salt, incense and ritual oil ready.
Perform your circle, and reflect on the blessing of the summer season.

Here are some simple chants you can incorporate into your celebration:

Fireflies and summer sun
in circles round
we become as one.

Singing songs at magick’s hour
we bring the winds
and timeless powers.

Swaying breathless, beside the sea
we call the Goddess
so mote it be!

You can write your own charm or blessing in your book of shadows, simply
find a few words to say thanks to the Goddess for summer abundance.

After you have performed the circle, called the directions (ESWN),
and invoked the Goddess or your spiritual guide, this is an excellent time
to ask for things you want.

Moon in Cancer is the best time to work magick for home and domestic life.
Healing rituals for ailments of the chest or stomach are also done during this period of time. It is a good time to ask for increase or prosperity, and to bless those you love, or to create amulets than bring love, luck, and health.

Blessed be~

SPRINKLING POWDERS TO EVOKE MAGICAL INTENT ~ RECIPIES FOR EVERY NEED

Create magical recipies to obtain change and things you want:

Sprinkling enchanted herbs and powders can invoke the influence of the herbs to achieve most any magical intent. Powders are traditional American folk magick and hoodoo that are potent and effective for creating change. Scattering herbs or blends around a home, property, or other area you want to infuse with magical intent is quite common in witchcraft. Powders are finely ground dried herbs, blends of herbs, or oils added to a base. Most often a mortar and pestle are used with fresh or dried herbs that have been gathered for a particular use. Finely ground or powdered, you can create magical powders for any purpose, and even store them for future use.

Protection powder is used in a circle ritual or sacred space. Salt is also used as a tool to block negative influence. To enhance your magical work, powders may be dusted onto your altar and ritual objects to increase your magical intent, or blown into the air to spread their magical influence through a room or place.

Resins used in enchanted blends or incense should be obtained in a powdered form. Resinous materials are very difficult to grind yourself as they can stain, and are gummy or very sticky when crushed whole. You will appreciate using them in powdered form.

Fresh ingredients gathered by hand are the most potent. See my herb recipe directions for proper handling and enchantment to collect your ingredients. Or, purchase your herbs from a reputable source, avoid commercial products that may contain chemicals or preservatives.

Recipes below are very old, having been in use for centuries in some cases. Be careful about skin sensitivity if you plan to use any of these on the body, or where they will contact the body.

When blending your recipe, focus on your intent, use a motar & pestle to grind ingredients finely. Remember that a small amount is all you will need. Have one or more small containers or sealable 2×3 bags for your finished recipe. Store remaining supply in a dark and dry location, like a small box or drawer.

Magical Herbs ~ Drying your harvested
Plants, Blooms and Roots for Magical Use

Here are simple steps for drying the herbs you have gathered or obtained
for use in magick practices. Herbs like borage and snapdragon are only used
when fresh. Most others plants can be dried and stored for later use.

Remove damaged or insect-eaten leaves. Rinse all cuttings and roots thoroughly
with running water. Use paper towels to pat dry the plant parts, be sure
that any earthy material or other contamination has been cleaned off.

Lay out some paper towels, you can use cookie sheets or large flat pans to
make it easier to handle the drying herbs. Place leaves, stalks or blooms
flat, close but not stacked. Turn them each day to prevent mold, check your
herbs as you turn them and remove anything suspicious. Do not place your
herbs near an open window or directly in the sun. If you can, find a place
that is not disturbed, with good ventilation. I use a spare bedroom, or sometimes
my art shed.

When leaves are dry enough they should be almost brittle. It’s easy to tell
when plants parts are dry, just snap them.

To dry seeds and blooms with seed heads -like sunflowers, gently tie the
stems together carefully and put them into a brown paper bag. Be sure the
bag is deep enough to hang the plants and tie the open end around stem ends.
This is how you can dry the blooms and keep the seeds from being lost during
the drying process. This is a quick-dry method. When the plants are suspended
upside down within the bags containing them, you can hang them outdoors in
the sun, or hang in a window. It may only take a few days to fully dry, depending
on weather and temperature. Shake and roll the flower heads between your
fingers to remove all the seeds. You should remove any stems or woody pieces
before storing your dried seeds.

To dry flowers, for example hyssop, lilacs, roses, vervain, and others, place
them on paper towels after rinsing and patting dry, the same as for leafy
herbs. Larger flower petals dry best when separated before drying (rose buds
and miniature roses are dried whole). Hyssop, lilac and vervain have small
petal blooms and are stripped after drying. Compact flower heads like verbena
and yarrow are left whole after drying.

Roots dry very slowly. Hang them next to a heat duct, or near your fireplace
through the winter. A very warm spot will help dry them faster, but depending
on the thickness and type of root, you may need several seasons to complete
a natural drying. Again, a dry root will be brittle, and when broken it is
completely dried through it’s thickness. You can hurry the root drying process
for occasions when you must obtain quick results. Simply bake them slowly
in an oven at about 200 degrees. Or, if it is safe for you to do so, you
can dry them over an open fire, carefully turning them to avoid burning.

After some practice you will understand the drying process. Just be sure
that you allow enough time for the process to complete. Any moisture in plant
parts will cause mold when you store them. This ruins all your careful efforts.

Essential Oil Recipes ~Carrier Oils
Quality and Consistancy in Your Recipe Base:
Using Carrier Oils and Preservation Steps

Carrier Oils (Base Oils), chose the best recipe base from these mixtures:

Base oils are used as “carriers” for essential oils, and to dilute essential
oils because they may be too strong to apply safely to skin. Possible carrier
oils include:

Apricot Kernel oil: This light yellow oil provides a fine texture, is rich
in vitamins and minerals, and a popular choice.

Castor oil: A thick, sticky oil with a strong odor. It has good lubricating
properties.

Coconut oil: A light colored oil that turns solid in cooler room temperatures.
A fractionated version is exceptionally light and will not become rancid
making it a versatile carrier oil, though not often used.

Grapeseed oil: This oil has a very fine texture, with a distinct fragrance.
It has a greenish hue. The oil provides vitamins and minerals, and is an
antioxidant that will extend the life of other oils. Very popular oil that
is easy to find locally.

Hazelnut oil: This oil is medium-light, and absorbs very well. It has a nice
texture and a light and subtle fragrance that doesn’t contrast greatly with
the wonderful fragrances of natural herbs. My favorite choice for annointing
and body oils.

Jojoba oil: The properties are similar to liquid wax, much different than
vegetable oil. It is an antioxidant and does not turn rancid. Popular oil
for massage, it remains heavy on skin surface.

Olive oil: Extra-Extra virgin, cold pressed is the best quality. Olive oil
is very rich in vitamins, protein, and mineral content. It has a distinctive,
somewhat pervasive odor, but works well.

Sunflower Seed oil: This is a nice lightly textured golden yellow carrier.
Good essential fatty acids and vitamins, fair quality, low fragrance and
slow absorption.

Sweet Almond oil: A Pale golden oil with glyceride, linoleic and olein acid.
This is a very fine skin lubricant, rich in protein, vitamins and minerals.
Another popular medium-light oil, my second favorite for all general use.

Wheat Germ oil: An orange colored oil that is heavy and sticky. Very rich
in proteins, vitamins, minerals, and vitamin E. It is used mixed with other
carriers oil for it’s antioxidant properties that prevent degradation and
extend shelf life.

Approximate Measurements
1 drop = 0.05 ml
1 ml = 20 drops
1 teaspoon = 5 ml
1 teaspoon = 100 drops
1 tablespoon = 15 ml
1 tablespoon = 300 drops
1 ounce = 30 ml
1 ounce = 600 drops

Option 1:
For your best success, use fresh organic herbs so that chemical preservatives
and pestisides on commercial plants are never included in your mixture. You
may need to wild harvest, buy from a local organic seller, or grow your own
herb garden. Forest herbs are wonderful, also- wild flowers in untended locations
can usually be used. Herb gardens are easy, inexpensive, and require minimal
attention. You can even grow your favorites in a window box to start with.
Note: find a friend who has sage herb, tradition for sage is to be grown
by another.
Please don’t take the time to grow your own herbs just to use them in a common
vegetable oil that has preservatives, growth chemicals and pesticides. Choose
the oil that most suits your use. Organic olive oil might be costly but is
worth the extra expense it you are looking for something easy to find. You
may want to make your own oil base after trying these oil making options.
Check out a couple health food stores to try the recommended carrier oils.

Next, you will harvest, or gather and prepare your herbs. Herbs should be
diced finely to allow maximum absorption in your carrier oil. Powdered herbs
work best, since you can add them directly to the oil base for a quicker
result and stronger end product. If you decide to dice, you can tie the herbs
in cheese cloth, which is then placed directly in the oil. For fresh herbs
2/3 parts oil to 1/3 herb is recommended. Dried herbs will require a larger
amount of oil, about 80% oil mixture will work fine.
Now you need to extract the medicinal essence from the herbs. Heating the
mixture to around 100 to 115 degrees for about 2 weeks. Some people place
their jars in a sunny window, or outside where there is more exposure. You
can check your oil every few days until you achieve the desired result. Your
sense of smell is the best measure. Powdered herbs need to steep 7-14 days,
diced herb take 2 or more weeks, depending on the strength you want to achieve.

The next step is extracting the oil from the herbs. You can twist the cheesecloth
to strain the liquid into another jar, pour off the remaining oil, and let
it all settle. After a day or two pour off the oil again to eliminate pieces
of herbs and any liquid that surfaces. Your finished oil is ready to use,
or store in tightly capped dark jars or bottles.
Hint: a couple drops of Benzoin oil is a great natural preservative for oils
that have low antioxidants.

Option 2:
Choose a carrier oil (I prefer the overall qualities of Hazelnut & Sweet
Almond), and fresh or dried herbs or flowers. Have one or more small Jars
with tight fitting lids handy, to hold the mixture.
Place the base oil (whatever oil you have decided to use) and herbs in clear
jars, tightly cap. Store in a dark cool place. Once a week for 2 weeks, vigorously
shake the mixture in the jars. In the third week, use cheesecloth to strain
the mixture. Add more herbs and oil if necessary and allow to sit for another
2 weeks. When you have the scent that you want, strain the herbs out again
and use your finished oil or store in a dark cool place.

Option 3:
Pour your carrier oil into your mortar, add diced, crushed, or powdered herbs
a little at a time, pressing into the oil with your pestle. When the mixture
looks well blended, pour it into a bottle. Store the bottle in a dark, place
for three days. On the fourth day smell your oil to see if it has absorbed
enough of the herbal scents. When it smells right for you it is ready to
use in your spell work. Or, add more herbs and repeat the process until your
oil is as strong as you desire.
